CRLS News: MCAS Update

Dear parents,

You may have seen some misinformation in the news media this week regarding CRLS student achievement. Here are the facts:

86% of this year’s 10th graders met the state requirement for graduation, by passing both the ELA and Math sections of the state-mandated MCAS tests.

99% of the 12th graders have met the state requirement to graduate, after retests, virtually closing the achievement gap.

The chart below shows the percentages, broken into subgroups, of 10th graders who have already met the state requirement.

Subgroup % Passing
Asian 83%
African American/Black 82%
Hispanic 85%
White 92%
Low-Income 82%
Non-Low-Income 88%
SPED 62%
Non-SPED 91%
All Students 86%

While passing is the state’s requirement, we in the Cambridge Public Schools aim higher, setting the expectation that a significant majority of our students score proficient or advanced on the test.

This year, CPS saw student proficient/advanced increases in 11 of 16 test areas from last year. Since 2003, the number of students scoring proficient or advanced has increased at every grade level by significant percentages.

At the high school level, 68% of 10th graders are scoring proficient or advanced in math and 66% of 10th graders are scoring proficient or advanced on the English/Language Arts section of the test.

You should also know that students of the Class of 2010 performed well on the new state-mandated science MCAS graduation tests. 80% of the 348 students of the Class of 2010 passed the exam, while 43% of the 336 students who took the Physics exam scored proficient/advanced.

Please know we continue to strive for perfection, these results show we are making great progress in providing an excellent education for all students. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me via email at csaheed@cpsd.us or by phone at 617 349 6633.
