"SuperHeroes"
Tobin School held their 10th anniversary Read Across America Day on March 3, 2009. Our theme this year was Super Readers/Super Heroes. During library visits, we read many books about heroes, human and animal. The students read 6 different kinds of books over the last few months. They got to pick different books on animals, math connection books, poetry, favorite characters, favorite series, biographies, science, history and folktales. In art class with Ms. Campbell, students created their own "superhero" and some even created their own comic book page.
The morning of our celebration, students were greeted by Principal Power Man decked out in an appropriate outfit. He awarded each class (LE-Gr. 6) with a certificate for their reading, bookmarks and for some a "no homework, just read at home" pass. Guest community heroes came to read to all classes from Children's House to sixth grade. Guests from South Africa and the South Africa Partners came to share their important work in South Africa with our 7th and 8th graders. A small reception was held in their honor in the Tobin lobby.
In the afternoon, Tony Toledo, storyteller, had the younger children crowing, chanting, stomping and learning some sign language. He also retold to the middle school students an adventure tale of well-known Glouchester hero Howard Blackburn and his survival at sea. We all had a great day!
